Have you ever been to the city of Orange, Texas? This might just be one of the best kept secrets in Texas.
While in Houston not too long ago on business, I was able to explore the area a bit. What began as a trip to Port Arthur, ended up as a very pleasant surprise in quaint and friendly Orange.
The entire state of Texas is exceptionally robust in nature and the general feel of the American West, especially when you travel outside of the major cities like Dallas, Houston, and Austin, and move on to the smaller cities like Orange.
One of the most intriguing things about the American West – other than great food – is the art. And one of the nation’s most significant collections of American Western art can be found right in the city of Orange, at the Stark Museum of Art.
At The Stark Museum of Art of Art, you will find yourself taken back in time as you enjoy one of the finest collections of 19th and 20th century Western American art and artifacts in North America. While browsing this fabulous museum, you’ll also find a significant collection of American Indian art, and collections of glass and porcelain, and rare books and manuscripts.
The Stark Museum is the perfect destination for anyone with an interest in the American West.
Currently, there are four major collections available for viewing at the museum:
Western Art
The Western Art collection contains the work of many artists, and conveys the artistic interpretation of the western region of the period of two centuries.
American Indian Art
The American Indians had more influence on western art than any other group of people. This collection consists of objects created by members of the tribes of the Great Plains, Southwest, Eastern Woodlands, and Northwest Coast. You’ll see great examples of Plains clothing, body ornaments, and beadwork.
Decorative Arts
The Decorative Arts collection houses all of the incredible glass and porcelain pieces, and includes the only complete set of the United States in Crystal.
Rare Books and Manuscripts
The Rare Books and Manuscripts collection is an absolute “must-see” for any fan of early American literature.
If you find yourself near Orange, Texas this year, consider the Stark Museum of Art to be a “don’t-miss” destination.
