The Flickr Revolt

Unhappy Flickr Users
It seems there is a bit of a revolution going on over at Flickr this week. A growing number of the user base is quite unhappy with Flickr’s recently added video service. The greatest fear is that Flickr will lose focus on photos (pun intended) and “turn into another YouTube”.
There is a new Flickr group called “NO VIDEO ON FLICKR!!!”, which has already surpassed 8,500 members at the time of this post.
There is also at least one petition circulating that calls for the video feature to be removed.
I seriously doubt that Flickr will change their position at this point for a relatively small number of vocal users – out of the millions that use the service. No question this was a business decision, and the increase in revenue will outweigh all other considerations.
The “protesters” are probably right though. The addition of video uploads will definitely dilute the photographic community already in place.
Then one has to ask, what will be added next? Flickr blogging? Flickr MP3 sharing?
